The Bridge Schools Inspectorate has approval from the Secretary of State for Education and began its work in September 2008 to inspect schools belonging to the Christian Schools' Trust and the Association of Muslim Schools throughout England.
BSI provides an opportunity for cooperation between faith groups to establish a specialist faith schools inspectorate which respects their distinctive ethos. Ofsted monitors the work of independent inspectorates, including a sample of reports. An evaluation report on the inspectorate is available on the Ofsted website.
Inspection teams are led by highly experienced retired HMIs who understand the distinctive characteristics of faith based education. The aim is to raise standards in schools and to foster school improvement through inspection.
BSI is one of the bodies designated by the Home Office to provide educational oversight for privately funded further education colleges which bring in international students under Tier 4 arrangements. Damian Green, the Minister of State for Immigration, announced on 28th July 2011 that the Bridge Schools Inspectorate would provide educational oversight of privately funded colleges of further education with a clear religious purpose. On July 23rd 2012 the UKBA made an announcement regarding the registration of colleges wishing to receive educational oversight in 2014 and the new four-year cycle for privately funded sponsors.
